Virgil A. Suhre

Virgil Arthur Suhre, age 82 of Alhambra, IL, died Tuesday, October 04, 2011, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL. He was born on Monday, December 31, 1928, in Alhambra, IL, the son of Arthur W. and Mildred (nee Reckman) Suhre. On Sunday, September 25, 1949, he married Anita L. Suhre nee Knabel who survives. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Alhambra, IL. He was also a member of Salem UCC Brotherhood; Salem United Church of Christ (taught Sunday school); Alhambra Volunteer Fire Department; American Legion 362, Staunton, IL; VFW Post 1241, Staunton, IL. Virgil was born at Alhambra, IL; attended Alhambra Grade and High School; graduate of Highland High School. He attended Bidy Technical School with a degree in radio and TV service. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in San Diego, CA, Cherry Point, NC, and Camp Pendleton, CA. He served 14 months in Korea during the Korean War. He was discharged at Treasurer Island, CA, with the rank of staff sergeant. He served 15 years on the Highland District 5 Board of Education and as secretary for 13 years. He served 17 years on the board of directors for Alhambra-Grantfork Telephone Company and 15 years as secretary of the board. He joined Alhambra Volunteer Fire Department on May 1957, and retired in 1987. He was secretary of the department for 14 years and is a dispatcher for the Alhambra Fire Department 911 service. He was a rural mail carrier for U S. Postal Service for 37 years, and retired in 1991. He was also a member of Illinois Rural Carriers. He worked for Ghrig\'s Store in his youth.
