Robert S. Bauchens

Robert Samuel Bauchens, age 90 of Highland, IL, died Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL. He was born on Sunday, August 29, 1920, in East Saint Louis, IL, the son of Samuel and Frances (nee Luscomb) Bauchens. On Saturday, May 31, 1941, he married Juanita B. Bauchens (nee Baker) who survives. He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. He was also a member of VFW #1117-Caseyville, IL; YMCA-Edwardsville, IL; formerly with the French Village Fire Dept. and Iron Workers Local #392 in E. St. Louis. Mr. Bauchens was born in East St. Louis and grew up there in the Metro East communities. He graduated from Staunton High School in 1938 and served two years with the Civilian Conservation Corps. (C.C.C.) in Michigan and Idaho. He also worked with Blackburn\'s Poultry Business in Fairfield, IL until joining the Iron Workers in East St. Louis. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees in late 1942 with duty in Rhode Island, Bermuda, and discharged in October of 1945. After returning to East St. Louis, he worked as an iron worker, retiring in September of 1982. Mr. Bauchens moved to Highland in 1968. He was very active with the union, being a member for over 69 years. He served as a recording secretary, served on the executive board, and was chairman of the building committee. He also served on the School Board for Bluffview Park School District 186 for 10 years while living in Caseyville. He was secretary for eight of those years. He was involved in Youth Boxing with C.C.C., retiring with a 15-0 record. He enjoyed playing baseball and softball, fishing, swimming, and traveled to Hawaii, Cancun, and throughout the U.S. Served on the school board for Bluffview Park School, District 106, Caseyville for 10 years; Secretary for 8 years.
