James W. Kayser

James Walter Kayser, Sr., age 83 of Glen Carbon, IL, died Saturday, February 04, 2012, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. He was born November 04, 1928, in Highland, IL, the son of Elmer John and Martha Ann (nee Maurer) Kayser. On September 10, 1949, he married Gladys C. "Babe" Kayser (nee Loebel) who passed away on August 27, 1999. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. He was also a member of Knight of Columbus Council 1520 Highland; VFW Post 5694, Highland, IL; American Legion Post 365, Collinsville, IL; former member of the following: Board of Saint Joseph Hospital, Highland, IL; Highland Optimist; Board of Directors-Farmers and Merchants Bank, Highland, IL; Board of St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He was the founder of the following: Kayser Rexall Drugs; JW Kayser Pharmaceuticals, Chemists and Consultants; Radon LTD. He was a co-developer of what is now the Highland Health Care Center. James was born at Highland, IL; a graduate of Highland High School-1946. He entered the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served during the Korean War with duty on hospital ships and Naval Hospitals at San Diego, CA and Corona, CA. He had received a deferment from the Navy to go to Pharmacy College and graduated from Saint Louis College of Pharmacy, he then returned to the service. In 1956 opened Kayser Rexall Drug - one of the last to have a soda fountain in the metro east area. He sold it in 1984. From 1985 to 1996 he was a pharmacist with GEM Rexall Drug in Collinsville. He retired in 1996. He and his wife loved to travel internationally. He enjoyed Wind Jammer Cruises. His favorite place to visit was New Orleans. He was a good cook. His life surrounded around his family, friends and business. He always said, "My greatest assets are my nine children". Survivors include : Son - James W.
