Gary L. Mangum

Gary L. Mangum, age 79 of Hamel, IL, died Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Saint Louis University Hospital in Saint Louis, MO. He was born on Tuesday, August 27, 1935, in Bethune, SC, the son of Henry and Bleeka (nee Joyner) Mangum. On Sunday, July 14, 1957, he married Marilyn Olinda Mangum nee Sander who survives. He was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Hamel, IL (past Trustee; Elder; School Board; and Treasurer); former St. Paul Dart Ball League. Gary was born and reared in rural Bethune, South Carolina on a farm. He attended Bethune High School; he graduated from Columbia Commercial College in Columbia, South Carolina. He served 2 years in the Army National Guard and 4 years in the United States Air Force. While assigned to Scott Air Force Base, IL, he met Marilyn. He served 1 1/2 years in Europe mainly Greece. He worked several months at Cassens Transport in Hamel. He worked for 30 years in accounting and budget management at Scott Air Force Base. He traveled extensively through out the Military Air Lift System. After retirement he worked for Hopcraft Electric, Glen Carbon, IL, for many years. He enjoyed hunting with his sons and close friend Lawrence Brase, Sr. He took pride in his garden and his beautiful yard. He enjoyed reading, playing cards and dominos with friends and walking his beloved dog "Pete".He passed away with his family by his side. Survivors include: Wife - Marilyn O. Mangum, Glen Carbon, IL Grandchild - Shane R. Meyer (twin), Edwardsville, IL Grandchild - Dillon G. Meyer (twin), Edwardsville, IL Grandchild - Bond T. Mangum, Staunton, IL Brother - Melvin (Eunice) Mangum, Bethune, SC Brother - Dexter (Eula) Mangum, Lancaster, SC Sister In-law - Norma Jean (Duane) Hartlieb, Highland, IL Sister In-law - Lois M. Sander, Hamel, IL. He was preceded in death by: Father - Henry T. Mangum Mother - Bleeka M. Mangum (nee Joyner) Son - Jerry L. Mangum (stillborn) Sister - Beulah Davis Sister - Hattie Mae Payne Sister - Inez Catoe Sister - Irene Rae Sister - Mamie Blackwell Brother - Frank Mangum Brother - Barnwell Mangum Brother In-law - Marvin H. Sander (died 10/17/2013). Arrangements are being handled by Dauderman Mortuary in Hamel, IL. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, May 22, 2015, at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Hamel, IL and from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Hamel, IL. Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Hamel, IL., with Rev. Benjamin Ball, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be at Saint Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Hamel, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
