James H. Harvey

James H. Harvey, age 89 of Highland, IL, died Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at his residence. He was born on March 27, 1928, in Manistee, MI, the son of John and Susan (nee Houston) Harvey Jr. On February 19, 1983, he married Billie Joyce Harvey nee Davenport at Riverview Baptist Church in St. Louis, MO. James Harrison Harvey flew his final flight on January 21st, 2018. Jim was born to John and Susan Harvey in Manistee Michigan in 1928. He loved his parents dearly. After growing up in Michigan, Jim attend both the University of Michigan and Parks Air College in St. Louis, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering. He helped in his father’s auto company. Jim also served in US Army for the NATO peace keeping force in Europe in the early 50s which contributed to his belief that we are all responsible for the safety of the world. Jim worked in Ohio and St. Louis for Goodyear and settled in St. Louis and worked at McDonnell Douglas/Boeing during his career as a systems analyst; he remembered using punch cards to program computers. He had a wonderful ability to manage figures and had the daunting task of teaching math to his daughter Sally. Above all Jim was a consummate pilot, collector of historical aviation information (to him this clearly meant pre 1949) and repository of Monocoupe History. He refinished the wing for Lindbergh’s Monocoupe in his garage which now hangs in St. Louis Lambert Airport. He never knew a stranger. Jim married Billie in 1983 and they shared a beautiful life together for 32 years. After retirement they enjoyed flying, gardening, traveling, and collecting memorabilia. He played in a band called "The Cotton Pickin 6", playing Dixieland Music. Jim raised one daughter Sally who grew up flying every Saturday morning with her dad and was privileged to have each of her 3 sons receive their first rides recorded with pride in his log book. Jim was a father to Billie’s daughters, Karen Fuller and Cheryl Unterreiner and their children and grandchildren, attending many family events and countless Holidays. Jim would tell you he had an amazing blessed life, wonderful friends, a sense of purpose, and the ability to bring joy to others. He left his mark on both aviation, and to those who loved him. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL and from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Monday, February 26, 2018, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL. Funeral Service/Mass will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, February 26, 2018, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL, with Dr James E. Donahue officiating. Interment will be at Highland City Cemetery in Highland, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to the Creve Coeur Historical Avaition Museum.
