Shirley E. Volkers, age 89 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, February 17, 2019, at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra, IL. She was born on Thursday, October 17, 1929, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Edwin and Elizabeth (nee Ims) Donnelly. On Sunday, June 06, 1948, she married Melvin E. Volkers at United Methodist Church-Pocahontas, IL, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2012. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL. Shirley was born at Highland, grew up in rural Highland and graduated from Highland High School in 1948. During high school she worked at Rikli's Bakery; after graduation she worked for Quality Dairy Co. as a bookkeeper. She quit working to rear her family.. She enjoyed a big garden; sold vegetables from the garden. She had worked at the Highland Sweet Shoppe for a year; then operated a dried flower business for some 14 years. Donnelly nee Ims Died 05/27/1984 Husband - Melvin E. Volkers - Died 01/31/2012 Sister - Lucille J. "Lucy" Schwarz - Died 11/22/2014 Brother - Edwin H. Donnelly, Jr. - Died 05/28/1961 Brother - Harold G. "Harry" Donnelly - Died 04/08/1978 Brother - Herbert F. Donnelly - Died 01/25/1975 Sister - Alice C. Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL, Rev. Will VerDuin, Assoc. Pastor, Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL, officiating. Interment will be at Highland City Cemetery in Highland, IL.
