Madelyn C. Grotefendt, age 79 of Marine, IL, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville, IL. She was born on Saturday, March 10, 1934, in Michael, IL, the daughter of Otto and Agnes (nee Sebacher) Gotway. On Saturday, October 25, 1958, she married Delmar D. Grotefendt who passed away December 26, 2007. She was a member of Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church, Marine, Illinois. Madelyn was born in Michael, Illinois and spent her younger years in St. Louis, MO. She graduated from Murphsyboro High School, Murphysboro, IL, in 1952 and then worked as a secretary at SIU-C. She met her husband on a blind date and they later married and moved to Marine, IL. She helped her husband operate the farm and reared her family. She knitted afghans and sweaters and loved to read and do jigsaw puzzles. Survivors include: Daughter - Sabrina A. (Jim) Bowling, Edwardsville, IL Daughter - Shari L. Smugala, Saint Louis, MO Grandchild - Aaron J. Bowling, Edwardsville, IL Grandchild - Jordan T. Smugala, Columbia, IL Brother - Gerald (Judy) Gotway, Marion, IL Sister - Mona Gotway, Sugar Land, TX She was preceded in death by: Father - Otto E. Gotway Mother - Agnes Gotway (nee Sebacher) Husband - Delmar D. Grotefendt (died 12/26/2007) Sister - Ladonna Crimmins Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Marine, IL. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, February 21, 2014, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Marine, IL and from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Marine, IL. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marine, IL., with Father Pat G. Jakel, Pastor, St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Marine, IL, officiating and Rev. Philip Kershner, United Church of Christ of Marine, Marine, IL, co-officiating. Interment will be at Marine Cemetery in Marine, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to Hoyleton Childrens' Home or St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.
