Leta E. Plocher

Leta E. (nee Pfister) Plocher, age 104, of Highland, IL., died Monday, May 26, 2008, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland, IL. She was born September 19, 1903, in Jamestown (Clinton Co), IL., the daughter of John and Lea (nee Zobrist) Pfister. On December 19, 1923, she married Orville L. Plocher, who passed away September 1, 1998. She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL; Honorary member of the Women\'s Guild at church; Charter Member of Madison Co. Home Bureau; former member of Highland Historical Society; Paul Harris Fellow of Highland Rotary Club; Helvetia Sharpshooters Society; Weinheimer Senior Citizens (past President). Mrs. Plocher was born and raised in Jamestown, Clinton County, Illinois. She attended Fricker Country School and Rubican Business College in St. Louis. She had worked for the old Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. in St. Louis, in the payroll department. After her marriage, she and her husband lived at his family farm east of Highland in Saline Township, where they operated a dairy farm until 1929. They then moved to the Downalane Farm northeast of Highland - her grandson continues to operate the farm there. In 1952, when her husband retired from farming, they moved into Highland. After his death she lived at the Highland Home until 4/12/06, when she moved to the Fourth Floor of St. Joseph Hospital. Mrs. Plocher organized and led the \"Happy Hour\" 4-H Club for many years; served as Treasurer of the Highland Public School P.T.A. for one term; was secretary for the Women\'s Guild of the Evangelical United Church of Christ and served as president one term; was instrumental in organizing the Madison County Homemakers Organization; served as 4-H Chairman one term and president for one term; served as Chairman of the Homemakers Fair Kitchen for 5 years; was the Membership Chairman on the State Board of Illinois Homemakers for three years; was a standby teacher for Evangelical UCC Sunday School for several years; was a long time member of Highland Senior Citizens and served a term as president; helped organize Home Health Services at St. Joseph Hospital and catered weddings at her church. During her lifetime, she created over 200 beautiful quilts for her family and friends, her church, many organizations and facilities in Highland, Hoyleton and Alhambra. She enjoyed church work, quilting, sewing and hand-work. She was in charge of the quilting program at her church. Survivors include Daughter-Juanita L. (Howard) Flamm of Smithboro, Ill., Son-O. (Burnell) Hartlieb of Highland, Ill., David L. (Marilyn) Durr of Effingham, Ill., Rick (Chriss) Johns of Sugar Grove, Ill., Diane L. (Carsten) Fisher of Little River, S.C., Jeffrey L. (Brenda) Johns of Batavia, Ill., Rodney A. (Janet) Miller of Highland, Ill., Rachelle L. (Dan) Sauls of Highland, Ill., Russell D.
