Irene H. Schneck

Irene Helen Schneck, age 92 of Pocahontas, IL, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra, IL. She was born on Thursday, January 24, 1918, in Sorento, IL, the daughter of Peter and Gisella (nee Szoke) Mettler. On October 4, 1944, she married her first husband Robert A. Hile who passed away on April 4, 1945. On March 20, 1947, she married her second husband Elmer E. Schneck who passed away on August 5, 1996. She was a member of Grantfork United Church of Christ, Grantfork, IL. She was also a member of Sunday School Superintendent many years; Old Ripley Home Extension 30 plus years; American Legion Post 710 Tobias Bilueu - New Douglas, IL; American Legion Auxiliary; 8-40 Salon - Madison County #53; Bond County Farm Bureau; New Douglas Senior Citizens. Irene was born in Sorento, IL; grew up on the farm. She had helped her brothers with their business and had worked in Chicago for 2 years before marriage. She was a Sergeant in the Women\'s Army Auxiliary during World War II (entered Sept. 1, 1943 at St. Louis and discharged Nov. 5, 1945 at Ft. Sheridan, IL). She was the 2006 Illinois World War II Women Veteran of the year. She and her husband farmed north of Grantfork since 1952. She liked to crochet and bake. She gave cookies to \"HAVEN\" at Carbondale.
