Howard W. Mewes

Howard W. Mewes, age 94 of Chatham, IL, formerly of Jamestown, IL, died Friday, March 23, 2012, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. He was born on Saturday, December 08, 1917, Jamestown, IL, the son of Wilbur W. and Louisa E. (nee Jenne) Mewes. On Saturday, December 18, 1965, he married Rose Barbara (nee Kuepfer) Watson who passed away July 2, 2006. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Jamestown, IL; Men\'s Brotherhood of the Church; former member of the Timmermann-Benhoff American Legion Post 252, Breese, IL; Pocahontas Senior Citizens; International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, St. Louis, MO. Howard was born at Jamestown; graduated Pocahontas High School. He was drafted and served in World War II with the 379th Infantry, with duty in northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe; he was wounded in France; he received three Bronze Stars and one Purple Heart. After service he worked for 37 years at McDonnell Air Craft and helped change and build the F-4H and Voodoo 101. He was the Sexton for Jamestown Cemetery for 30 years. Howard and his wife had a large garden and harvested and preserved fruits and vegetables for many years from their garden; he knew "everyone". Howard also enjoyed wood working. Tiemann, Chatham, IL Step Gr Gr Grandchild - Amare DesJardins, Carbondale, IL Nieces & Nephews. He was preceded in death by: Father - Wilbur W. Mewes, died 02/02/1986 Mother - Louisa E. Mewes nee Jenne Wife - Rose B. (nee Kuepfer Watson) Mewes, died 7/02/2006 Brother - Warren H. Mewes Brother - Lamoine Mewes (at age 12 in 1936) Sister - Ruth Siebert Sister - Laverna Mewes (as an infant) 1st Wife - Hazel Kidd Mewes (divorced).
