Dr. Walter R. Schoolfield

Dr. Walter Roy Schoolfield, age 83, of Highland, IL., died Friday, November 24, 2006, at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra, IL. He was born May 15, 1923, in Rea County, TN., the son of John and Marg (Shortridge) Schoolfield. Mr. Schoolfield graduated from high school at Spring City, TN, he earned from the University of Tennessee his BS and MS, and later a PhD from St. Louis University. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy (1941-1945). He worked in Chicago in the early 50\'s. He moved to Highland, IL June 16, 1972. He was a teacher, psychologist and administrator throughout his life. He had worked for the Collinsville School District, as a psychologist for public schools; after his retirement in 1984 (30 years of service). He set up a consultant service for handicapped. In his retirement, he returned to Florida in 1990 where he was the School Psychologist for Monroe County Schools (The Keys); and later as a substitute he taught in Palm Beach County. In the Spring of 2003 he suffered several serious strokes, and has been in nursing homes since. He returned to Illinois in March 2004. He enjoyed playing softball; and had played baseball until age 45. He was the Player/Manager of the State Champs baseball team from Titusville, Florida in 1965. He also enjoyed fishing. He and his wife traveled extensively, especially on cruises. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church - Highland, IL. He was also a member of Immanuel Catholic Church - Del Rey Beach, FL; Highland Rotary Club (Past President); V.F.W. Post 5694 of Highland (Past Commander); Highland Zoning Board (Past Chair). Survivors include Daughter-Myra S. Schoolfield of Pittsburgh, Pa., Son-Sanford R. Schoolfield of Coral Gables, Fla., Step Daughter-Linda M. (Charles) Sommercorn, DDS of Libertyville, Ill., Step Son-Robert Lee Rehberger of Stockbridge, Ga., Step Son-Jeffrey L. (Tisha) Rehberger of Highland, Ill., Sister-June Walker of Jasper, Tenn. He was preceded in death by Father-John C. Schoolfield, Mother-Marg V. (Shortridge) Schoolfield, Step Son-Gregory J. Rehberger (died 1972), Sister-Ruth Bock, Sister-Faye, Sister-Betty Ann, Brother-Bill Schoolfield, Brother-Johnny Schoolfield Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, Ill.
