Donald J. Mersinger

Donald James Mersinger, age 88 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at his residence. He was born October 02, 1925, in Saint Jacob, IL, the son of Leo Valentine and Sophie Teresa (nee Nagel) Mersinger. On November 25, 1950, he married Ruth Estelle Koch who survives. He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church. He was also a member of Holy Name Society (Past President); Rural Mail Carriers Local. Donald was born at St. Jacob and moved to Highland at age 2 1/2 years old. He has lived on the home place every since. He attended Saint Paul School. He helped with family farm, assumed operation of farm (livestock and grain) after his father's death. He retired from farming in 1977. He started in 1968 as a sub mail carrier and went full time in 1977 in the Highland Post Office. He retired in 1988. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling (3 times a week), takening care of his garden, puzzles, picking walnuts and playing cards (Poker and Jass). Enjoyed traveling to Florida, Hawaii, and Italy . Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, May 30, 2014, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL, and from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM, on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Saint Paul Catholic Church in Highland, IL, with Rev. Fr. Charles A. Edwards, Pastor, Highland, IL officiating. Interment will be at Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Highland, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Vincent De Paul Society; Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago, IL; School Sisters of Notre Dame.
